About

I am a landscape and nature photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I have lived for more than 30 years. I’m drawn to scenes in nature large and small, and although water is a common theme in my photography, I don’t limit my work to a single category or style. I most enjoy wandering in the woods or along the coast looking for things that inspire my creative eye. My photography is about my experience in nature and an expression of the scenes, shapes, patterns, and light that capture my attention. It’s about how I saw a small (or large) slice of the natural world.

I’m originally from New England, and I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Colorado, where I spent a lot of time outdoors. My father gave me his old Nikon SLR when I was in high school, and I learned photography shooting black and white film and doing darkroom processing. I failed to continue my development as a photographer at the time, as life’s priorities took me in other directions. Years later, as our kids got older and I had a little more time, I returned to photography with new energy and a desire to create images that expressed my vision of nature.

I’m fortunate to live 15 minutes from the California coast, redwood groves, and expansive nature preserves, all of which I return to frequently. I’m also within reasonable driving distance of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada mountains, which offer infinite opportunities for exploration. Each year I do a number of dedicated trips to these and other locations, where I immerse myself in the landscape. While I enjoy meeting other photographers when I’m in the field, I find I’m most comfortable shooting alone. I’m less inhibited, and I feel more connected to nature, which helps me approach photography more clearly and deliberately.
